ZAZ account becomes GP ID: new importer requirements from 2027

Until now, many companies have handled their customs clearance through the so-called ZAZ account. This account served both as an identification method and as a means of handling invoicing and payment transactions with the customs authorities.
With the introduction of Passar 2.0, this system will be fundamentally revised. The existing ZAZ account will be replaced by the GP ID (Business Partner ID). This change affects all importing companies.
In future, the GP ID will serve as the central identification number for goods traffic with the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS).
Important: There will be no automatic conversion. Companies must register independently via the Federal Government’s ePortal and apply for a GP ID.
What will change for you?
The transition will bring several fundamental changes:
In future, each company will only have one GP ID, which is linked to the UID number. Multiple ZAZ accounts will no longer be possible.
Documents and invoices will be processed via the Federal Government’s ePortal in the future. Sending PDF invoices will no longer be permitted.
Security measures will be risk-based rather than processed uniformly.
Transition Phase
The transition will take place gradually. The timing of the changeover can be determined individually during the transition phase. During this period, both systems will operate in parallel:
The existing ZAZ account in the e-dec system will remain valid
The GP ID will be mandatory in the new Passar system
What you should do now
To ensure a smooth transition, we recommend implementing the following steps promptly:
Register on the Federal Government’s ePortal and apply for the appropriate GP role
Register branches if multiple locations are involved
Clarify internal organisation and processes
Coordinate the transition with your freight forwarder
